![]() ![]() InterfaceĪ contact reader is primarily defined by the method of it's interface to a PC. The dominant protocol under the ISO 14443 is MIFARE, followed by the EMV standards. Many contactless readers are designed specifically for Payment, Physical Access Control and Transportation applications. This type of reader works with a radio frequency that communicates when the card comes close to the reader. ![]() This interface enables larger data transport without the overhead of anti-collision and wireless breakdown issues that are a result from the card moving in and out of the reader antenna range. The typical PTS Protocol Type Selection (ISO7816-3) negotiated speed can be up to 115 kilo baud. This communication has the advantage of direct coupling to the reader and is considered more secure. The card-to-reader communications is often ISO 7816 T=0 only. This is the most common reader type for applications such as ID and Stored Value. However, a contactless smart card doesn’t need to be touched in any way with the card reader and it can be accessed from a distance. This type of reader requires a physical connection to the cards, made by inserting the card into the reader. These readers are often installed on doors and smart cards need to be touched on these readers to pass through. A contact smart card has eight contact places on the card, which should physically touch the contacts on the reader to pass on data between them. The difference between both the cards is the way with which the chip on the card functions. Difference between Contact and Contactless Readers This technology is widely used as it is more secured than other similar technologies out there. They are perfect for social insurance focuses, for endeavors and associations, and in addition for e-organizations and managing account applications. A contactless card does not need to be fed into a reader and the information on it can be accessed without physical contact. The smart card should be pinned in the smart card reader to access it.Ī contactless smart card reader permits the exchange of more information, and access to several cards at the same time. Readers which are used to read these smart cards are called smart card contact readers. The processor on the smart card has a working chip system that can deal with numerous applications, for example, a cash card, an access control card or a membership card. This card differs from the proximity card because unlike proximity cards, smart cards have more than one functionality. There are two types of smart cards readers: contact and contactless smart card reader.
